Realtors, Real Estate Agents, Brokers? What does each mean?

Real estate professionals in the US go by different names. There are agents, brokers, realtors...the list goes on.
If you’re entering the United States real estate market for the first time, you may find real estate professionals' various titles a little confusing. Sometimes consumers use these titles interchangeably, but there are some important differences between the roles of the various professionals, as well as different requirements for using particular titles.
When it comes to choosing someone to represent your best interests, don’t just assume that any real estate professional will do. Just because the terms might be interchangeable, doesn’t mean they’re the same. So what exactly is the difference between realtors, brokers and real estate agents?
